Maintenance requirements for A.F.P polyester powder coated products
The purpose of planned maintenance is to ensure that no more than cosmetic treatment ever becomes necessary.
Polyester powder coated products needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly to ensure the decorative and protective properties are retained. The frequency of such cleaning will depend on many factors including:-
- The geographical location of the building
- The environment surrounding the building i.e. marine, industrial, alkaline/acid etc…
- Levels of atmospheric pollution
- Prevailing winds
- Protection of the building by other buildings
- Possibility of air borne debris (e.g. Sand) causing erosive wear of the coating
The best method for cleaning is by regular washing of all coatings, using a solution of warm water and mild detergent (e.g. 5% Teepol solution). All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge, using nothing harsher the natural bristle brushes. Do not use any types of solvent cleaner.
If atmospheric pollution has resulted in heavy soiling of the coating then nothing harsher that white spirit should be used for cleaning and in no circumstances should any abrasive cleaner or any cleaner containing ketones, ester or alcohol be used.
The frequency of cleaning depends in part on the standard of appearance that is required and also the requirement to remove deposits, which could, during prolonged contact with either the powder film or metal substrate (if exposed) cause damage.
In industrial environments the normal frequency of cleaning should be no more than three monthly intervals. However where there is high atmospheric pollution or an extremely hazardous atmosphere (i.e. combination of actors in item 2) this should be reduced to cleaning at monthly intervals.
Where the atmosphere is deemed to be non-hazardous (i.e. Rural), or where “Clean Environments” have been declared then the period between cleaning frequency can be extended to not more than eighteen months.
However if the project is subject to any unusual environment factors or is close to salt water or marine environments, A.F.P must be consulted on an individual basis.
